1971 Yamaha AT-1 MX

In 1969 and 1970 Yamaha produced the 125 AT-1 Enduro and many were quickly stripped down, tires changed and fitted with an aftermarket tuned exhaust. The result was a great shifting and modestly powerful 125 entry level motocross bike.

It was amazing how many actually made it to the 125 junior and intermediate classes. For the price and reliability, they were a great fit. In 1971, Yamaha raised the bar with the introduction of the AT1-MX like this one. They were fully intended to be a motocross or desert racer and again they were a success. Boasting a new pipe, carburetor and port modifications, a lighter overall weight and more horsepower, they were a better entry level motocrosser.

Unfortunately, nobody rode at the expert level on these little bikes as the Pentons, Bultacos and DKW’s were just more powerful, better handling bikes. Eventually, the competitors would dominate all levels of the 125 cc class and the Yamaha ATI-MX would fade away after just one year. It was not until 1974 when the YZ-125 would make a huge comeback for Yamaha.
