1974 Yamaha 360 YZA

In 1971, Yamaha had employed Torsten Hallman, Gary Jones and Don Jones to aid in the development of their line of motocross racers. Don Jones was an innovator, his son Gary was the 1971 and 1972 National Champion, and Torsten Hallman was a former Multi World Champion. Between them they spent years developing the YZA and eventually the world’s first production “monoshock” the 1975 360 YZB.

This YZA represents the most elaborate and exotic motocross production racer for 1974. These were not available to the public as only about 631 were produced and were given or sold to only the finest motocrossers world wide. Yamaha spent unprecedented money in the development of these machines. “Dished out” fasteners and milled down forks and axles for weight savings. A velcro strap to hold on the tank for quick access, a low mounted motor to lower the center of gravity and oil reservoirs for the rear shocks were all designed for efficiency and better handling. They are very fast and agile, making them a serious motocross weapon.

My friend Lee Fabry did the initial restoration and I added several of the correct components including tires, shocks, front number plate, grips, throttle components, rear backing plate and pipe supports. This bike is exactly as it rolled off of the showroom back in 1974.
