1971 Maico 400 MX

This bike was a low use survivor that was fully disassembled and completely restored. Rare pieces on the bike include the original bars, shocks, down pipe, steel Raedelli rims and NOS Metzeler tires.

These big bore Maicos were a real factor in the world motocross scene as well as the Southern California tracks in the early 70’s. Tim Hart expertly rode one locally and won just about every race he entered.

In 1973, the radial head Maicos debuted and their handling was superior to the 71 version. With the broad power band, the 73’s became an instant hot seller. Unfortunately, the reliability of the Maico became a real issue with clutch and transmission problems. To make matters worse, the Japanese bikes began their rise to the top and Maico sales would all but disappear. By 1987, because of minimal sales and a devastating fire, Maico was forced to close its doors.
